Scenario: アメリカ人の私は日本の礼儀作法に戸惑うことがある。まずは、お辞儀をして挨拶。握手もハグもしない。久しぶりに訪問する際には、手土産が必要。料理を出されてもすぐに手を付けないなどなど、自分にとっては面倒なことばかりだ。日本にいると、ついこう言いたくなる。

【ポイント】「リミット(limit)」の使い方。

"limit"には、動詞と名詞がありますが、今回は名詞の"limit"の使い方をまとめてみました。（ロングマンを参考にしています。）

① 「制限」

「制限がある」は、"There is a ～ limit."という言い方が一般的。
次のような形容詞を付けて使う場合が多い。

an upper/ lower limit 　上限／下限

the speed limit 　　　　　スピード制限
a time limit   　　　　　　時間瀬源
an age limit   　　　　　　年齢制限

使い方
There is no upper limit on the amount you can borrow.
借入金額に上限はありません。

「制限」を目的語に置く場合、動詞は次のようなものを使うことが多い。

put /set/place　置く
introduce/impose　　導入する／課する
lower/ reduce　　　減らす
raise 増やす
go over 越える

My wife and I set a limit on how much we spend on clothes.
妻と私は衣服に使うお金の額に制限を設けた。

We have to put a limit on the number of participants.
参加人数に制限を設けなければならない。

Too many people go over the speed limit in residential areas.
住宅街で制限速度をオーバーする人が多すぎる。

There’s no limit to what you can do if you try.
やろうと思えばいくらでもできる。

②「限界」という場合

人間の知識の限界

Our finances are already stretched to the limit.
私たちの財政はすでに限界まできている。

He’d reached the limit of his patience.
彼は我慢の限界に達していた。

His private life is off limits to the press.
彼の私生活は報道の限界外だ。（立入は禁止されている）

You can come and go when you want – within limits.
出入り自由です。制限内でね。

③ 主語＋have/has ～'s limits

今日のフレーズで使われているものです。
口語的に、「～には～なりの限界ってものがある」といったニュアンスになります。

ロングマンの説明は次のようなものです。

have a set of rules about what is reasonable behaviour, and to not accept behaviour that does not follow these rules
何が妥当な行動かということについてのルールがあって、そのルールに添っていない行動を受け入れないこと

I have my limits. You will not use that kind of nasty language in class.
私には私の限界ってものがあるのよ。授業中にそのような汚い言葉を使わないで。

Joey is just kidding, but even I have my limits.
ジョーイは冗談で言ってても、私にも限界ってものがあるのよ。
