Scenario: 電子時計を買った。時間設定をしようと思って取り扱い説明書を見たのだが、字が小さくて読みにくい。そろそろ老眼鏡が必要なのかもしれない。

【ポイント１】「視力」を表す２種類の単語

ロングマンによると、

"eyesight"は、不可算名詞で、その定義は、

your ability to see

となっています。

一方、"vision"は、不可算名詞で、その定義は、

the ability to see

となっています。

この２つは、同義語ではありますが、INSIGHTというサイトにこの２つの単語の違いが記載されていました。

Eyesight　　
Eyesight refers to a person’s ability to see. More specifically, it’s a person’s ability to see without the use of appliances like glasses or contacts. Not all people share the same clarity of eyesight. Some are genetically more disposed to see more clearly than others. But a person’s eyesight can change over time depending on their health as well as on environmental factors.

視力とは、人の見る能力のことである。より具体的には、眼鏡やコンタクトのような器具を使わずに見る能力のことである。すべての人が同じ鮮明な視力を持つわけではない。ある人は遺伝的に、他の人よりもはっきり見える傾向がある。しかし、人の視力は、その人の健康状態や環境要因によって、時間とともに変化することがある。

Vision　　
While eyesight happens primarily in the eye, vision happens in the brain. Vision is the brain’s ability to process the information coming from the eyes. When the eyes pick up an image, a quick process begins for that image to be translated and understood by the brain. With enough practice, vision can improve.

視力は主に眼で起こるが、視覚は脳で起こる。視覚とは、目からの情報を処理する脳の能力である。目が画像を捉えると、その画像が脳で翻訳され理解されるまでの素早いプロセスが始まる。十分な練習をすれば、視力は向上する。

どちらかと言えば、"eyesight"は「視力」のニュアンスが強く、"vision"は「視覚」のニュアンスが強いように思います。しかし、はっきり日本語の単語としてこの２つを分けることができません。

【ポイント２】"eyesight"、"vision"を使った表現

視力に関しては、"eyesight"、"vision"のどちらを使ってもいいのですが、表現が異なる点もあるので、この２通りを使った場合の表現を整理していきます。（ロングマンを参照しています。）

"eyesight"を使う場合

●「良い」という時に使える形容詞

猫は夜間視力が良いが、色はあまり見えない。

She could read easily, but her peripheral vision was poor.
彼女は字は楽に読めたのだが、周辺視野が狭かった。

One of the symptoms of the illness is double vision.
この病気の症状のひとつが、物が二重に見えること（複視）だ。

"vision"には、「視力」の他に、「洞察力」や「展望」、（テレビの）「映像」などの意味がありますが、"eyesight"にはそれらの意味はありません。
