1457. 新年特別編：前置詞クイズ！

昨日に引き続いて、新年特別編です。今日はお話を読み進めながら前置詞を空所に入れてみましょう。答えが複数考えられるものもあります。また不要な箇所もあります。

ストーリーは犬の散歩で友達と公園に来てベンチに座っていた著者と、犬の散歩で公園に来た男性とのやりとりで進んで行きます。（原文はニューヨークタイムズのメトロポリタンダイアリーです。）

As we were talking, a man walked up with his dog. She stopped walking just before the bench we were on.

“This is her bench,” he told us, shrugging.

As he tried to tug her onward to the next bench nearby, she walked ( ×) a few steps, looked us  in the eye and lay down again.

“We’ll go to the next bench, it’s OK,” we told the man.

I had gone for a long walk on the path along the West Side Highway with a friend I’d recently reconnected with.の２つの"with"について。

"I'd ....connected with"の"with"は、".... a friend (that) I'd reconnect with"という関係代名詞の前の先行詞、"a friend"にかかって、"...reconnect with a friend"という形を作るための"with"。

"walked ( ×) a few steps"の"walk"は、後ろに距離に当たる単語を目的語として置くことができる他動詞とされています。（マクミラン、ロングマン）

"onto"は、"on"、"to"のどちらと置き換えてもいいですが、"onto"として一語で使うことで、「～の上の方へ」といった移動を感じさせます。
