【ポイント】"farther"なのか"further"なのか？

"farther"も、"further"も、どちらも"far"の比較級です。品詞は副詞と形容詞があります。

どちらを使うか？というと・・・

"further"を使っておけばいいです。

ですから、それらをひっくるめて"further"を使うことが多いのです。

ロングマンでは、"farther"では、同義語として"further"が出てきます。
"further"には、その表記がありません。

さらに、"farther"には次のような説明が載っています。

日常で使う英語では、普通"father"よりも"further"を使い、（最上級では）"farthest"よりも"furthest"を使う。

FARTHER and FURTHER both mean “at a greater distance, ” and they often are used interchangeably, though they aren’t quite the same.

"FARTHER"と"FURTHER"は両方とも「より遠い距離に」という意味である。そしてどちらでも良い場合が多いのだが、その意味が全く同じというわけではない。

FARTHER typically refers to physical length or distance. It is the comparative form of the word “far” when referring to distance.

"FATHER"は、特に物理的な長さや距離を言う時に使われる。距離を言う時の"far"の比較級である。

FURTHER typically refers to abstract distance. It can also mean “to a greater degree,” or “additional.” It refers to time or amount.

"FURTHER"は、特に抽象的な距離を言う時に使う。また、「程度がより大きく」、あるいは「追加で（さらに）」という意味でも使う。時間や量に使う。

Correct: New York is farther north than Washington, DC. (Refers to physical distance)

TIP: Use FARTHER for physical distance and FURTHER for metaphorical/abstract distance. FARther has FAR in it, and “far” obviously relates to physical distance.

ヒント：物理的な距離には"FARTHER"を使い、比喩的、抽象的な距離には"FURTHER"をつかう。"FARther"には、"FAR"がはいっている。"far"は明らかに物理的な距離を示している。

【ポイント２】「追加」を聞く場合の、「How much + 比較級」。

今日のフレーズで、「あとどのくらい？」の「あと」という日本語が「今までやったことに加えて」という意味を表現しています。このように、「追加」や「差」を聞くときには、

「How much +比較級」

を使います。　　（How many ＋ 比較級　の形はありません。）　

「どのくらい年上なんですか？」
　How much older are you (than he)?

「どのくらい高いんですか？」
How much more expensive is it?

（"expensive"の比較級は、"more expensive"なので、この語順になります。）

How much more time will it take?
あとどのくらい時間がかかりますか？

です。

明日は、「買い替えようかなって思ってるの。」です。"buy"や"change"を使わないで表現できるみんなが知ってる単語があります。
