【ポイント】簡単そうで難しい、「横向き」を表す英語表現。

「横に」という副詞で使う場合、"sideways"と"s"がつきます。一語で副詞として使えます。

A strong gust of wind blew the car sideways into the ditch.

※名詞で「脇道」という場合は、"a sideway"や、"a side way"ではなく、"a side road"が一般的です。

道路の脇にある「舗道」、「歩道」はアメリカ英語では、"a side walk"です。

「バイパス」は、"bypass"と一語で表し、「街の周りの道路のこと」または「車で混んでいる街を回って行く目的を持った道」のことです。ロングマンの定義はこちらです。
