今日は、年末特別編。クイズを作って見ました。

文を読み進んで、カッコの中の単語のどちらか適切なものを選んでください。

It was March 2013, and I was having a big birthday. 
Because the date ① ( fell / happened ) on a weekday, my wife and I had ② ( extended / delayed ) going out for a

誕生日がウィークデイだったので、私の妻と私はお祝いの日を土曜日まで伸ばし、外出してお祝いのディナーをすることにしていました。（それはそれで）私は楽しみにしていたのですが、本当の私の誕生日の当日は、それほど特別だという感じはありませんでした。

普段、私は通勤で歩いていたのですが、その夜はM102番のバスに乗ることにしました。私は42丁目と三番街の角でバスに乗りました。
「今日が誕生日の人いる？」とドライバーが言ったのです。「誰か今日が誕生日の人いるでしょ？」

ちょっと考えてから、私はいくらかきまり悪そうに今日私の誕生日です、と言いました。もう一人の乗客も、そう言いました。
私たちの名前を聞いてから、ドライバーはバスいっぱいの乗員に「ハッピーバースデー」の歌を歌おうと言ったのです。

そしたら、なんと乗客全員が歌ってくれたのです。楽しそうに。

“Whose birthday is it today?” the driver said. “It must be somebody’s.”

① fall on ～

何かの出来事が特定の日や時間に起るときに使う表現です。

Her birthday will fall on a Friday this year.
彼女の誕生日、今年は金曜日だわ。

② "delay"を他動詞で使って、「～を遅らせる」という表現ができます。
「～することを遅らせる」の場合は、動名詞を続けます。

  Big companies often delay paying their bills.
大きな会社はよく支払いを遅らせる。

③ celebrateは、できごとを祝う場合で、congratulateは人が何かを達成したときに、その人に対して使います。
celebratoryもcongratulatoryも形容詞です。

④ 文脈から、本当の誕生日には、お祝いをしていないので、特に印象に残る日ではありませんでした。ですから、ここは、didn’t feel memorable。

⑤ 文脈から、「普通は」＝NormallyやUsuallyがいいです。

⑥  "ride"は自転車や、オートバイ、馬など、またがって乗るものに使われることが多いです。ですから、ここは“board”。
board = to get on a bus, plane, train etc in order to travel somewhere

⑦ 時間に対して、"in" を使うと、経過を表します。
　　"in a minute"→　一分して（すぐに）ここは、「少しの時間考えて」ですから、“for a moment”。

⑧ sheepishlyは、「おずおずと」、「おそるおそる」、「おどおどしながら」、「ビクビクしながら」などの表現に当たります。

⑨ encourage ＋人＋to ～ で、「人を～するよう促す」となります。suggestにはこの用法がなく、suggest ＋ that節を使います。
⑩ ここの"which"は関係代名詞で、前の文全体を受けています。
会話では、相手の言ったことを受けて、「そのことは（を）」といった意味になります。
