Scenario: モールでは２月に入ると春のセールが始まっている。洋服ばかりではなく、靴やバッグも春らしいデザインと色になっている。バッグを買いたいと思って手に取っていると、店員さんにこう言われた。

「色のお好みはございますか？」

【ポイント】「好み」の表現に使われる単語。

今日のフレーズで、
「お色にお好みはございますか？」
と聞かれた場合と、
「お好きな色はどれですか？」
と聞かれた場合と、
どのような違いを感じますか？

前者でつかわれるのが、"a color preference" で、
後者で使われるのが、"a favorite color"　です。
前者は、選択肢が示されない場合、後者は示されている場合によく使われる表現だと思います。

"preference"は、"prefer"
"favorite"は、"favor"
という動詞形を持っています。

さらに、男性と女性では、好む色が異なるという研究結果もあります。男性は強いはっきりした色を好み、女性は淡い色調を好みます。男性は黒を加えたシェードを、女性は白を加えたティントを好みます。

These huge differences in color preference can guide you to choose the correct colors to ensure maximum engagement. Not all male and female preferences differ, however, and many opinions transcend gender.

色の好みには大きな違いがあるため、適切な色を選択すれば、ほぼその選択に間違いがなかったと確信することができます。しかし、男性と女性の好みがすべて異なるわけではなく、多くの意見が性別に関わりません。

年齢が上がるにつれて、男女ともにオレンジや黄色が嫌いになる

「どちらかといえば～が好み」「そちらを希望する」といったニュアンスでは、"prefer"、"preference"
が使われ、
「気に入っている」、「一番好き」といったニュアンスではfavor"、"favorite"
が使われている傾向があるように思いますが、どちらでもあまり差がない場合もあるようです。

Parents can express a preference as to the school their child will attend.
親御さんたちは、お子さんが通われる学校についてご希望を出されることができます。

The amount of sugar you add will depend on personal preference.
入れる砂糖の量は、個人の好みによります。

Many elderly people expressed a strong preference to live in their own homes.
