Scenario: 転職して情報関係の会社に就職した。パソコンについては、次のような指示があった。

「パスコードは毎日更新してください。」

【ポイント】「パスワード」、「暗証番号」などの英語表現。

今日は、混乱しがちな「暗証番号」に関する英語表現を挙げてみました。

① ID(アイディー）

IDは、"identification"と同義で、次のような定義になります。（ロングマンより）

a document that shows your name and date of birth, usually with a photograph
氏名と生年月日が記載された書類のことで、普通写真がついているもの

よく、「IDとパスワードを入れてください」と日本語で書いてあって、自分が記憶しているものが、IDなのかパスワードなのか分からなくなることはありませんか？

英語のサイトだと、普通、"user name" or "your e-mail address"、さらに"phone number"のどれかを入れるように指示されると思います。急にIDを入れろと言われても慌てます。

日本語の画面でログインするときに"ID"を入力をするボックスには、本人の「メールアドレス」を入れることが多いと思います。

IDは、動詞としても使えます。「本人と特定する」という意味です。"identify"の代わりに使われます。

使い方

本人が特定できるものをお持ちですか？

7歳のとき、バスの運転手から大人料金を請求されたときのために、身分証明書を携帯しなければなりませんでした。

⓶ password （パスワード）

a secret group of letters or numbers that you must type into a computer before you can use a system or program
文字や数字の他人の知らない並びで、システムまたはプログラムを使用する前にコンピュータに入力する必要があるもの

可算名詞で、ひとつのパスワードとして使う場合は単数扱いです。

使い方

Enter your password, then click on the ‘proceed’ icon.
パスワードを入力し、「次へ進む」アイコンをクリックしてください。

Give your user name and password.
ユーザー名とパスワードを入力してください。

⓷ code　(暗証番号)

4桁の暗証番号なら、"four-digit code"になります。

「４桁」が付いているので、"code"は、番号のことになりますが、"number"ではなく、"code"を使うのが一般的です。"security code"となっているものもあるかもしれません。

"code"の定義は次のようなものです。（ロングマンより）

何かが何であるかを示す、またはそれに関する情報を与える、数字、文字、または記号の集合

数字や文字が複数あっても、ひとつのまとまりの場合は単数扱いです。

コンピュータ関連以外では次のような使い方をします。

Goods that you order must have a product code.
注文する商品には必ず商品コードが必要です。

Every item found on the archaeological dig is given a code number.
考古学的発掘で発見されたすべての品物にはコード番号が付けられています。

④ PIN (PIN number ／PIN code)

PINは、"personal identification number)の略です。
これについては、Wikipediaの説明を引用します。

A personal identification number (PIN), or sometimes redundantly a PIN number or PIN code, is a numeric (sometimes alpha-numeric) passcode used in the process of authenticating a user accessing a system.

PIN（Personal Identification Number：個人識別番号）、または、重複した言い方だがPIN 番号、PIN コードは、システムにアクセスしているユーザーを確認するプロセスで使用される数字（場合によっては英数字）の暗証番号のことです。

⑤ passcode　（パスコード）

こちらの説明を引用します。

A passcode is a type of security method used to protect devices and services. It's similar to a password, but is restricted to a smaller character limit (around 4-8 characters), and its character set is usually limited to numbers 0-9.

パスコードは、デバイスやサービスを保護するために使用されるセキュリティの方法の一種です。パスワードに似ていますが、文字数の制限が少なく（4～8文字程度）、文字セットも0～9の数字に限定されるのが一般的です。

When entering a passcode on a smartphone or tablet, the virtual keyboard displays only numbers, so the user is aware the character set does not include letters and symbols. There are also visual cues to indicate how many characters complete the passcode. For these reasons, a passcode is much less effective at securing a device than passwords when securing data.

スマートフォンやタブレットでパスコードを入力する際、バーチャルキーボードには数字のみが表示されるため、文字や記号が含まれていないことが分かります。また、パスコードが何文字で完成するかを示す視覚的な印もあります。したがって、パスコードはパスワードよりもデバイスを保護する効果がはるかに低いです。

⑥ validation code　（ヴァリデーションコード）

「認証コード」と呼ばれている、クレジットカードに書かれている数字のことです。

A validation code—also known as a CVV, CV2, or CVV2 code—is a series of three or four numbers located on the front or back of a credit card. It is intended to provide an additional layer of security for credit card transactions that take place online or over the phone.

CVV、CV2、またはCVV2コードとも呼ばれるヴァリデーションコードは、クレジットカードの表面または裏面にある3つまたは4つの数字の羅列です。これは、オンラインまたは電話によるクレジットカード取引に追加のセキュリティを提供するためのものです。

⑦ combination　（暗証番号／組み合わせ番号）

日本語表現では、「暗証番号」と言われていると思いますが、金庫についている鍵や、自転車などの一時的に保管するためについている鍵についている暗証番号のことです。日本ではほとんどが数字だと思います。
