Scenario: 高校教師をしている。週に１回は駅前で生徒の下校の様子を監視している。今日は何人かの生徒がコンビニの前でマスクをはずして大きな声で騒いでいる。通行の妨げになるばかりか、ウィルス感染のもとになるかもしれない。早速やめるよう厳しく指導した。

「今回は厳重注意にとどめるが、二度目はなしだ。」

"I'm gonna let you off with a lesson this time, but this will never happen again."

【ポイント1】簡単な単語と"off"を組み合わせれば、日常的な動作がたくさん言える。

"off"のもつイメージをつかんで、簡単な動詞と組み合わせて様々な日常的な動作を言ってみましょう。（例文はロングマンを参照しています。）

①　「場所を離れる」イメージで使う。

He got into his car and drove off.
彼は車に乗り込んで走り去った。

They were off to Italy.
彼らはイタリアに向かって出発した。

He went off to work as usual.
彼はいつものように仕事に向かった。

I'm off to class.
行かなきゃ、これから授業なんだ。 

Her business has taken off.
彼女の仕事は上向いてきた。

I felt quite excited as the plane took off from Narita.
飛行機が成田を離陸するとき、私はすごくドキドキした。

② 「何かの上に乗っていない（くっついていない）」イメージで使う。

Keep off the grass.
芝生に乗らないでください。

As he leaned forward, his hat fell off.
体を前に傾けたので、帽子が落ちた。

Someone had taken the mirror off the wall.
鏡を壁から外した。

Take off your coat.
コートを脱いでください。

③ 「乗り物を降りる」場合に使う。

I’ll get off at the next stop.
次の停留所（駅）で降ります。

Everyone got off the train at Asakusa.
みんな浅草で電車を降りた。

④ 「電気関係の器具を切る」イメージで使う。

Will someone switch the radio off?
だれかラジオを切ってくれない？

Make sure all the lights are off.
電気が消えてるか確認して。

⑤ 「仕事が休み」「仕事を休んでいる」というイメージで使う。

My secretary’s been off with flu for the past week.
秘書はインフルエンザで先週休んでいた。

Clare had to stay off school because her mother was ill.
クレアは母親が病気だったので、学校を休まなければならなかった。

You look tired. Why don’t you take tomorrow off?
疲れてるみたいね。明日は仕事休んだら？

He needs more time off duty for relaxation and rest.
ゆっくり休養するためにもっと仕事の時間を減らす必要がある。

⑥　「中止や延期」のイメージで使う。

The concert is off.
そのコンサートは中止だ。

The race may have to be called off if the bad weather continues.

悪天候が続けばそのレースは延期しなければならないかもしれない。

⑦ 「免除する」イメージで使う。

I’ll let you off this time, but don’t do it again.
今回は許すが、二度とするなよ。

I'm going to let you off the hook this time.
今回は見逃してやろ。

You’ve worked hard all week, so I’ll let you off today.
今週ずっとよく働いたから、今日は休んでいいよ。

Dad took the day off to come with me.
父は休暇を取って私と一緒に行ってくれた。

【ポイント２】”lesson"は「レッスン」だけではない。

日常会話で、「レッスン」は日本語として定着していると思いますが、英語ではもっと広い意味で使っています。

こんな場合にも使えるという例を、定義とともにロングマンを参照して整理します。

① a period of time in which someone is taught a particular skill, for example how to play a musical instrument or drive a car
あるスキルをまなぶ一定の時間のこと。たとえば楽器の演奏のしかたや運転の仕方を習う時間のこと。

この場合は日本語で、「レッスン」という時もありますが、「講習」ということもありますね。
piano lessons　　　　　　ピアノのレッスン
 driving lessons　　　　車の運転の講習
lessons in First Aid　　　救急の講習

②something that provides experience or information that you can learn from and use
　相手が学んだり使ったりできる経験や情報を与えるもの
例
I learned a lesson from her.
彼女から学んだ。（彼女を見ていると勉強になる。） 

The government has failed to learn the lessons of history.
政府は歴史から学んでこなかった。

The men’s courage and faith is a lesson to us all.
その男たちの勇気と信念は我々皆のいい勉強になっている。

Now let that be a lesson to you all .
それをいい経験にしてこれからは注意しなさい。
