Scenario: コロナウィルス感染が世界的に拡大しているため、我社がやっている海外でのプロジェクトのひとつを閉じることになった。コロナウィルス感染に気をつけながやらなくてはいけないので、立ち上げのときより大変だ。今日の会議で様子を聞かれたのでこう言った。

「進めてます。」

【ポイント】"in"の後に無冠詞の名詞を持ってくるやり方。

"in  progress"  
意味 
 happening now, and not yet finished
今起こっていてまだ終わっていない　　（フォーマルないいかた）
例
A lecture is in progress in the main hall.
メインホールでまだ講義やってるよ。

They looked in periodically to check the work in progress.
彼らは進捗中のその仕事をチェックするために定期的にのぞいた。

"in trouble"
例
He admitted that their marriage was in trouble.
彼は夫婦間に問題があることを認めた。

We’ll be in big trouble if Mr. Elliott finds out.
エリオット先生に見つかったら大変なことになるよ。

I think I’m in trouble with Dad.
オヤジに叱られると思う。

"in use"
意味
a machine, place etc that is in use is being used
機会や場所などが現在使用中であるということ
例
All of the washing machines are in use.
洗濯機はみんな使用中です。

The meeting room is in use at the moment, so we'll have to go somewhere else.
その会議室は今使用中ですので、別の所に行きましょう。

"in advance"
意味
before something happens or is expected to happen
何かが起こる前に、あるいは何かが起こりそうな前に、と言う意味
例
I should warn you in advance that I’m not a very good dancer.
前もって言っとくけど、私、あまりダンスは得意ではないのよ。

Book tickets 21 days in advance.
21日前にチケットを予約して下さい。

Could you distribute copies in advance of the meeting?
前もって会議資料のコピーを配布して下さいますか？

"in sight"
意味
a) inside the area that you can see
見える範囲に
例
I glanced around me quickly. There was no one in sight.
ざっと見回したが、誰もいなかった。（見えなかった）

The boys get home and eat everything in sight.
男の子たちは家に帰ると、目に見えるもの全部食べてしまう。

b) likely to happen soon
もうすぐ起こりそうだということ
例
Six months from the start of the strike, there is still no end in sight.
ストライキが起こって６ヶ月になるが、いまだ終わりが見えない。

"in hand"
意味
if something is in hand, it is being done or dealt with
「手中にある」というと、それがなされている、あるいは対処されている所であるということである
例
Plans are in hand to perform ‘Oz’ next semester.
「オズの魔法使い」の次期上演をするよう計画中である。

Our officers have to concentrate 100 per cent on the task in hand.
わが社は手掛けている仕事に全力を傾けなければならない。

"keep ～ in mind"
意味
to remember or think about someone or something when you are doing something
何かをするとき（人の言ったことや事柄を）覚えていたり考えたりするということと
例
It’s a good idea – I’ll keep it in mind.
それはいいアイデアですね。覚えておきます。

You must always keep the reader in mind when writing a report.
レポートを書くときはそれを読む人のことをいつも念頭に置け。

Keep in mind that the price does not include flights.
その値段には航空運賃ははいってないということを忘れるなよ。

注："in someone's mind"になると、「意見を持っている」という意味になります。
