【ポイント１】"social distance"の意味を確認しよう。

新型コロナ感染で、あちこちで「ソーシャルディスタンス」というカタカナを見たり聞いたりすることが多いですが、英語では、"social distancing"「ソーシャルディスタンスィング」を使います。

In sociology, social distance describes the distance between different groups in society, such as social class, race/ethnicity, gender or sexuality. Members of different groups mix less than members of the same group. It is the measure of nearness or intimacy that an individual or group feels towards another individual or group in a social network or the level of trust one group has for another and the extent of perceived likeness of beliefs.

社会学的に、「ソーシャルディスタンス」というのは、社会の中で異なったグループ間、例えば、社会階級や人種／民族、あるいはジェンダー、性的特徴が共通の人々の間にある距離のことです。異なったグループに属する人たちは他のグループの人との付き合いが少ないのです。個人やグループがほかの個人やグループに対して社会的ネットワークの中で感じている近さや親しさを示します。また、一つのグループが他のグループによせる信頼のレベル、考えが似ていると互いに認める程度をも示すものです。

In public health, social distancing, also called physical distancing, is a set of non-pharmaceutical interventions or measures intended to prevent the spread of a contagious disease by maintaining a physical distance between people and reducing the number of times people come into close contact with each other.

公衆衛生において、「ソーシャルディスタンスィング」は、「フィジカルディスタンスィング」と呼ばれることもあり、薬剤を用いず、人々の間の物理的なな距離を保ち、近い距離で接触する回数を減らすことによって伝染性の病気を拡大するのを防ぐために用いられる手段。

日本では、「ソーシャルディスタンス」が英語の「ソーシャルディスタンスィング」を意味することがあり、もしそういう形で定着するなら日本の中では問題ないでしょうが、英語で話す時には、気をつけた方がいいです。

【ポイント２】"social"の派生語を使って、会話力を高めよう。

"society"は、「社会」という訳語で広く使われています。この「社会」という日本語は、様々に違う意味で使われる言葉です。"social"は形容詞、"socialy"が副詞です。これらが様々な意味の「社会」という意味で使われている例をあげようと思います。

仕事や、家族、裕福な度合いを基にした、社会の中での個人の位置について（いう時に使う形容詞）

学生たちは様々な社会改装から集まる。

③relating to meeting people, forming relationships with them, and spending time with them
　人と会って、彼らと関係を築き、彼らと時間を過ごす（ことに関して使われる形容詞）

エクササイズのクラスは健康維持と人と良い関係を築く良い方法だ。

"socially"

上に示した"social"の副詞です。使い方のみをあげておきます。
