Scenario:  新年恒例の「カラオケコンテスト」に友人が応募し、予選を勝ち抜いて、本選に進めることになった。本選ではテレビに出演し、歌った後プロの先生方のコメントがもらえるのだが、今日は次のように絶賛されていた。

「あなたの人間性がよく表れています。」

"It magnifies your personality."

【ポイント１】"magnify"の面白い使い方。

"magnify"の、”magni-”の語源は、「大きい」という意味です。それに-"fy”を付けて、動詞化しています。

"magni"がついているものとしては、

"magnitude"    巨大なこと
"magnificent"   壮大な

がありますが、いずれも「大きい」ニュアンスを表しています。

"magnify"はロングマンでは次のような定義になっています。

① to make something seem bigger or louder, especially using special equipment
特に特別な物を使って、何かをより大きく見せること。

例
A public address system magnifies all the little noises and coughs.
拡声装置は小さな騒音や咳まですべておおきくしてしまう

② to make something seem more important than it really is 
実際よりもっと重要であるようにみせること

例
The report tends to magnify the risks involved.
そのレポートは伴うリスクを強調する傾向がある。

「強調する」には他にも様々な単語があります。(ロングマンを参照して、主なものを確認しておきましょう。）

emphasize 
to say strongly or show clearly that a fact, idea etc is especially important
特に、事実、アイデアなどの重要性を強くいったり表したりすること

exaggerate 
to say that something is much bigger, better, worse, more important etc than it really is
あるもの（こと）が実際よりずっと大きい、悪い、重要なのだ等々と言うこと

stress 
to emphasize something when you are talking about a subject
あることについて話しているときに、何かを強調する(emphasize)こと

highlight 
to show that something is important, so that people will pay special attention to it
ある事物が重要であること示して、人が特別な注意を払うようにすること

underline
to help to show clearly that a fact is true, especially a fact that is already known
あることが真実であるとはっきり示すのを助けること。特にすでに知られている事実について。

play up 
to emphasize something and make it seem more important than it really is, especially to get advantages for yourself
何かが実際より重要であるように強調すること。特に自分に有利になる場合。

例
The story has been played up by the media.
その話がメディアによって、大きく報道された。

The Labour party had a great time playing up the Conservatives’ problems.
労働党は保守党の問題を強調して悦に入っていた。

【ポイント２】"personality"と"character"の違い。

ラジオの「パーソナリティー」、
登場人物の「キャラクター」、「イメージキャラクター」

といったように、日本語でも、この２つを使い分けていますが、実際英語ではどのような違いがあるのでしょう？　ロングマンで確認しました。

"personality"

 someone’s character, especially the way they behave towards other people
特に他の人への接し方に見られる人の性格　　→　人間性、人格

"character"

the particular combination of qualities that makes someone a particular type of person
その人のタイプをを特定するような性質の特定の組み合わせ　　　→　性格、性質

「ラジオのパーソナリティー」という使い方は、この定義とは違った、もうひとつの定義にあてはまります。それは次の定義で使われているものです。

someone who is very famous and often appears in the newspapers, on television etc, 
especially an entertainer or sports person 
とても有名でしばしば新聞やテレビなどの登場する人。特にエンターテイナーやスポーツ選手を指す

この意味では、"TV personality"や,"radio personality"、"sports personality"など、何かと組み合わせて使われることが多いです。

例
He is one of the most well-liked TV personalities.
彼は、テレビで最も人気のある人の一人だ。

"celebrity"と意味が似ています。

"celebrity"

someone who often appears in newspapers, on television etc and is well-known to the public.
テレビなどによく出る人で多くの人によく知られている人

のこと。「セレブな生活」とか「セレブな奥様」といった、日本で使っているように「お金持ち」ではありません。（結果的に富裕層が多いのかもしれませんが。。。）

"character"は、日本語で「自分のキャラ」という言い方をしますが、ほとんど英語の定義に合っていると思います。
また、登場人物のことを、「漫画のキャラクター」という使い方も英語と同じです。
