Scenario :　年があらたまり、今日は職場の新年会が開かれた。座席表を渡されて、見ると以前から思いを寄せている人と同じテーブルだということがわかり、ドキドキしていた。席につこうとすると、彼がいて、なんと・・・。

椅子を後ろに引いてくれた。

He pulled up the chair for me.

【ポイント１】"pull up"は日常的に行っている動作にかかせない。

"pull up"は句動詞で、日常生活のちょっとした動きを表すときに便利です。

例えば椅子の動かし方と、車の止め方を言う時の例をあげてみます。

★　椅子の動かし方を言う場合
He pulled up a chair opposite.
彼は向かいの椅子を自分の前に引き寄せた。

she pulled up a chair closer to the TV. 
彼女は、（もっとはっきり見るために）椅子をテレビに近づけた。

He pulled up a chair for me.
彼は椅子を引いて私を座らせてくれた。

He pulled a stool to my desk.
彼は（話をしようと）私のデスクに腰掛けを持ってきて座った。

★　車を止めるときに使う場合
Pull up a little closer.
もうちょっと近くに止めて。

Please pull up at the corner.
その角で止めて。pull up to standing

Don't forget to pull up the handbrake.
ハンドブレーキを引くの忘れないで。 

She pulled up to the door.
彼女は入り口の所に車を横付けしてくれた。  

A blue van pulled up behind us.
一台のバンが我々の後ろで止まった。

※"pull over"は、「車を道路脇に停車させる」ことです。
ロングマンの例です。
The policeman signaled to him to pull over.
He pulled the car over.
A cop pulled him over and gave him a speeding ticket.

★その他、「引く＋上げる」という動作で次のような表現になります。
● 雑草をねこそぎ取る　→　pull up a weed by the root
● 情報を引き出す　→ pull up information
● 襟を立てる　→　He pulled his collar against the cold wind.
● ズボンを引き上げる　→　pull up his pants

pull-tab / pulltab は缶詰などについている指を入れて開ける「プルタブ」のことです。イギリス英語では、"ring-tab"と言います。
