【ポイント１】"within"と"during"の違いを確かめよう。

学校で習う"within"は多くが前置詞です。
よくテストに出される選択問題で、"within"か、"during"のどちらを選べば良いか迷うことがあるので、ここではっきりさせましょう。

"within"は、「～以内に」という意味で、よく数字と共に使われる。
”during"は、「～中」という意味で、後に期間を表す語がきて、数字は来ない。

という説明が、学校でなされる一般的な説明です。

確かに、
○ within 10 minutes
× during 10 minutes

○ during the war
× within the war

です。

基本的にはこれだけで十分だと思いますが・・・

まずは、ロングマンの定義からです。（例も）

during a period of time, or before the end of a period --- used when you want to emphasize that it is a short or limited period
一定の期間のこと、あるいは期間が終わる前のことで、短い期間や期限のある場合を強調したいときに用いる。

例
There have been five serious accidents within the last few days.
ここ数日の間に５件の重大な事故が起きている。

Payment must be made within 30 days.
支払いは30日内にしなければならない。

If we are inviting you for an interview, you will receive a letter within 14 days.
あなたを面接にお呼びする場合は、14日以内にお手紙を差し上げます。

"within"は、距離について使うこともできます。

例
The invading troops came within 50 miles of Paris.
侵入軍がパリから50マイル以内にやって来た。

※その他に、"within"は建物や地域、組織、体にも（～の内側）という意味でも使えますが、今日はそのことは省きます。

次に、”during"の定義です。（ロングマンより）

一定時間におけるある時点に、あるいは一定時間全体にわたって

例
Did you hear the storm during the night?
夜中じゅう、嵐が聞こえなかった？

During the summer we spend a lot more time out of doors.
夏中、我々は屋外でずっと長い時間を過ごす

"during"は距離に対しては使えません。

【ポイント２】"within"には前置詞以外の使い方がある。

副詞で使われる場合は、「内部で/に」とか「内側で/に」という意味になります。
普通は、"inside"で済ませてもいいところだと思います。ただ、"within"にすると、ちょっと詩的な響きを感じます。

ロングマンでは副詞の使い方の例文は少ないです。
例
The rooms within were richly furnished.
その部屋の内部は家具が豊富に置かれていた。

Baby rabbits for sale. Enquire within.
うさぎの赤ちゃんを売っています。中でお問い合わせください。
(この用法は、特に、お知らせや張り紙などで使われます。）

今日のフレーズにあるように、"within"は、"from within"(中側から / 内面から）という形で使われることがあります。この"within"は後ろが省略された前置詞なのか、名詞化した副詞なのか、辞書によっても扱いが違います。"from behind"（後ろから）や、"from here"（ここから）の用法と似ています。
