Scenario : 今季、職場で移動があり、エミリーが管理責任者になり、みんな驚いている。新しい体制での出発を祝うパーティーで、社長がこう言っていた。

「私がエミリーを抜擢して管理責任者にしたんだよ。」

" I pulled Emily out of the field and onto chief administrator."

【ポイント１】様々な意味をもつ"field"という単語。

"field"は、「フィールド」というカタカナで、日本語の中にも入ってきました。
ロングマンを参照して整理したいと思います。

①  an area of land in the country, especially one where crops are grown or animals feed on grass
郊外の土地。特に穀物を育てたり、放牧されたりしているような土地

a field of wheat/corn/rice
corn/rice/wheat etc field
日本語→　田んぼ、畑、牧草地

② a subject that people study or an area of activity that they are involved in as part of their work
研究しているテーマ、仕事の一部としてかかわっている活動の範囲

 the field of human rights　人権の分野
 an expert in this field.      この分野の専門家
He’s the best-known American outside the field of politics.
彼は政治以外の分野で最も有名なアメリカ人だ。

【ポイント２】肩書・役職名には冠詞を付けるか付けないかを判断する。

学校では、役職名には冠詞をつけないと習ったと思います。
ロングマンの例には、次のように出ています。

Potts was appointed chairman of the education committee.
ポッツが教育委員会の会長に指名された。

冠詞は、

特定のもの→　定冠詞"the" →　その、あの、例の

という基本的なことに従えば、肩書や、役職は、「仕事の内容」や「仕事の種類」を表しているものなので、数えられず、無冠詞で書くことが普通です。

（※ "chairman"よりも"chairperson"の方が好まれます。もしくは、性別を問わず、女性も"chairman"で定着している場合もあります。）

反対に、冠詞が付いている例をロングマンの中で探しました。

 He is a former chairman of the board of management of Volkswagen.
彼はフォルクスワーゲンの経営委員会の前会長です。
（現在は辞めているので、「一人の人として」扱っています。）

The new prime minister was advised to see an image consultant.
その新しい首相は一人のイメージコンサルタントを探すよう助言された。
（名詞に形容詞が付いて、一人を特定する場合、"the"をつけたり、「多くのうちの一人」のニュアンスのときに"a"をつけることがある。）
