Scenario : 今日の会議は長くなりそうだ。取引先から連絡が入ることになっていて気になる。スマホでチェックしたいのだが、会議が始まってしまった。すると隣に座っていた同僚がこう言った。

「後でやれるからさ。」

"There will be a chance to check it later."

【ポイント】日本語で「機会」となる英語の使い分け。

日本語で「チャンス」という場合、「好機」といった意味で使われることがほとんどだと思いますが、同じような意味に"opportunity"があります。どのような違いがあるのか調べました。

"chance"
a time or situation which you can use to do something that you want to do
やりたいと思っていることをするのに使える時間や状況
the possibility that something will happen, especially something you want
何か（特に起って欲しいと思っていること）が起こる可能性。

"opportunity" 
a chance to do something or an occasion when it is easy for you to do something
何かを行う機会や何かを容易に行える状況
a chance to get a job or improve your situation at work
仕事を得る機会のこと、あるいは職場での立場の改善をする機会のこと。

定義と例を見て、"chance"と"opportunity"の使い方をまとめてみます。
★どちらでもいい場合がある。
★"opportunity"は、"chance"に比べて、固い、正式な感じ。
★"chance"には、「可能性」や「幸運」を含むニュアンスがある。
★"opportunity" は、「就職、仕事」に関して用いられる場合が多い。

ということで、今日のフレーズでは、「時間、状況、可能性」のニュアンスのある、"chance"がピッタリですね。
