Scenario : うちの近くに古い建物がある。昔は大きなホテルだったらしいが、今では廃墟と化している。昔は多くの人で賑わっていたらしいが・・・。

「誰も近づかないよ。」

【ポイント１】"near"の使い方は、意外と難しい。

「私の家は駅に近いです。」というとき、

My house is near the station.　　→　"near"は前置詞。

と言いますか？それとも、

My house is near to the station.　　→　"near"は形容詞

結論としては、どちらもOK.

イギリス英語では、"near to"を使うほうが多いです。

○ My house is nearer. （比較級にすると大丈夫。）
○ The station is not far away.

× I'm looking for a near station.

○ I'm looking for a nearby station. 

【ポイント２】"close"と"near"の違い。

ただ、人や物から離れている距離が短いということ

"close"
very near something or someone, or almost touching them
人や物が非常に近くにあるということ。あるいは手に届きそうということ

例
The hotel is close to the beach.
そのホテルはビーチが近い。

Nancy came and sat close beside me on the bed.
ナンシーはやってきて、ベッドの上の私の横近くに座った。
