【ポイント】"people"（人々）は複数なのに"ｓ"が付かない。

「集合名詞」という名前で分類されるものには、"s"がついていないのに、複数扱いされるものと単数扱いされるものがあります。複数扱いされるものには、"many"がついても、"s"はつきません。

family

family is usually followed by a singular verb:
近い関係のある集まる「ファミリー」という意味では通常単数扱いである。

• In British English, you can also use a plural verb:
イギリス英語では複数扱いもできる。

furniture
• Furniture is an uncountable noun and is not used in the plural. You say:
"furniture"は不可算名詞であり、複数では使わない。

The house has some beautiful old furniture.　　
（らぼによる注："some"は不可算名詞にも付きます。some milkのように。）
✗Don’t say: The house has some beautiful old furnitures.

• Furniture is always followed by a singular verb:
動詞は常に単数。

The furniture was in good condition.

• When talking about one chair or table, you say a piece of furniture or an item of furniture:
（家具の一部としての）椅子一脚、テーブル一台等をさす場合は、"a piece of furniture"とか、"an item of furniture"となる。

There was only one piece of furniture in the room.

fruit
• Fruit is usually uncountable:
通常不可算名詞である。

I love fruit.
✗Don’t say: I love fruits.

• Fruit is used as a countable noun when talking about particular types of fruit:
特定のタイプを指す場合は可算名詞になる。

They grow mainly citrus fruits.

sports
• In British English, you say:
イギリス英語では、次のように言う。

I like watching sport on TV.
Sport is an uncountable noun in this meaning.
この場合の"sport"は不可算名詞である。

• In American English, you say:
アメリカ英語では次のように言う。

I like watching sports on TV.
Sports is a plural noun in this meaning.
この場合の"sports"は可算名詞である。

日本語のカタカタ語として定着している「フルーツ」や「スポーツ」を今更「フルート」や「スポート」にできませんね？

「どんなスポーツが好きですか？」はどう言いますか？
"What sports do you like?"
なら、複数のスポーツを聞かれているように思うと、アメリカ人の友人が言っていました。

「どのスポーツが一番好きですか？」
だと、
"Which sport do you like the most?"　
でしょうね。大抵ひとつのスポーツを答えるでしょうから。
