Scenario: 春になって植物が芽を吹きだした。花も咲きだした。先日友人の庭を見せてもらったが、様々な木が植わっていて、花もきれいに咲いている。毎日庭仕事をするという友人にこういった。

「手入れが行き届いてるね。」

【ポイント】「メンテナンスをする」と「直す」の違い。

「メンテナンス」というのは、機械や建物に多く使われる日本語です。
ロングマンの定義では、次のようになっています。

"maintenance"　　　不可算名詞
the repairs, painting etc that are necessary to keep something in good condition
何かを良い状態に保つために必要な修繕や塗装など

実際の英語では次のように使われています。

the maintenance of the school buildings
校舎のメンテナンス

maintenance of bridges
橋のメンテナンス

the maintenance of international peace and security
国際平和と安全の維持

These are crucial conditions for the maintenance of democratic government.
これらは民主党政権の建て直しには重大な山場だ。

 Our primary concern is the maintenance of discipline in the school.
我々の一番の関心事は学校における規律の微調整だ。

 Aeration used intelligently is a boon to the maintenance of the health and vitality of the fishes.　
（水の中に）適度に空気をおくってやることは、魚たちの健康と活力の維持管理にとって良いことである。

　　以前と同じ状態、レベルを続けさせること
　例
　　The hotel prides itself on maintaining high standards.
　　そのホテルは高いレベルを維持していることに誇りを持っている。

② to make a level or rate of activity, movement etc stay the same
   行動、動きなどのレベルや基準を同じに保つこと
　例
It is important to maintain a constant temperature inside the greenhouse.
　　温室の中では一定の温度を維持することが大切である。

　　
③ to strongly express your belief that something is true
それが  真実だという自分の信念を強く表現すること
　　例
　He maintained his innocence and said the allegations were ‘ridiculous’.
　彼は無実を主張して、その言いがかりは馬鹿らしいと言った。

定期的に検査をしたり修理したりして、機械や建物などをいい状態に保つこと

その会社は公衆電話ボックスのメンテナンスを行っている。

　

日本語の「メンテナンスを行う」という表現は、英語の"maintain"や"maintenance"より対象が狭いですね。
