Scenario: 残業で遅くなり、駅に向かって急いで歩いていた。すると、人が集まっていて何か騒がしい。どうやらマスクの着用を巡って居酒屋の店員ともめているらしい。「ケンカか売ってんのか？（→694）」と大声で怒鳴っているのは、同僚だった。驚いて駆け寄り、こう言った。

「お前が騒ぎを起こしたのか？」

"You started a brawl?"

【ポイント】「トラブル」、「対立」、「争い」に関する単語。

対立している場合の状況や、問題をかかえている状況についての単語は、その大きさや、怒りを伴うのか、傷つけあうことがあるのかで言い方が違います。日本語でも様々な単語があるように、英語にも様々な単語でその状況を表しています。

対立の激しさの度合いで次のように分類してまとめてみました。
文脈によっては、ニュアンスや定義が異なる場合があります。

① 「問題がある」という意味で使う

trouble
when something does not work in the way it should
何かがちゃんといかない（動かない）こと
例
The plane developed engine trouble.
その飛行機にエンジントラブルが発生した。

hitch
a small problem that delays or prevents something
遅らせたり邪魔したりするような小さな問題
例
There have been a few last-minute hitches.
土壇場でいくつか小さな問題が見つかった。

problem
a situation that causes difficulties
困難を引き起こすような状態
例
She was older than me, but that wasn’t really a problem.
彼女は私より年上だったが、そんなことはあまり問題ではなかった。

snag
informal
a problem, especially one that you had not expected
（くだけた言い方）特に考えてもみなかったような問題
例
There’s a snag – I don’t have his number.
あ、彼の電話番号知らないわ。

hassle
spoken
a situation that is annoying because it causes problems
（口語）問題になるような困った状況
例
Just trying to store all this stuff is a hassle.
これをすべて取っておこうというのは困ったことだわ。

② 対立状態になっていて、時には少し激しくなることがあるような場合に使う。

dispute
a public or legal argument about something, especially one which continues for a long time
特に長期間続くような、公的なあるいは法的な議論→　議論、争議、紛争、論争、不和
例
The settlement will resolve a long-running dispute over the country’s nuclear program.
この和解は、同国の核開発プログラムをめぐる長年の争いを解決するものになるでしょう。

scuffle
a short fight that is not very violent
あまり暴力的ではない短いケンカ　→　小競り合い
例
There was a short scuffle with the police, but no arrests were made.
警察と小競り合いがあったが、逮捕者はいなかった。

altercation
formal
a short noisy argument or fight, especially one that is not serious
(フォーマルな言い方）
特に深刻ではないような短い言い合いやケンカ
例
There was a brief altercation and someone called the police.
ちょっとした言い合いがあり、誰かが警察に電話した。

quarrel
a short angry argument, especially between people who know each other well
よく知っている人の間で起こる短く怒りを伴う言い争い
例
Jacob left after a quarrel with his wife.
ジェイコブは妻と言い争いをした後、出て行った。

argument
a situation in which people speak angrily to each other because they disagree about something
納得しないことがあるため、お互いに激しく言い合いをする状況
例
I’ve had an argument with my girlfriend.
ガールフレンドと口論になっちゃったんだ。

disagreement
a situation in which people disagree with each other, but without shouting or getting angry
叫んだり怒ったりはせず、人同士が納得しない状況
例
Ginny left the company after a disagreement with her boss.
ジニ―は上司と折り合いがつかず、その会社を辞めた。

③ 怒りを伴い、対立が激しい場合に使う。

fight
a situation in which two people or groups hit, push etc each other
２人、あるいは２つのグループが殴ったり、押し合ったりするような状況
例
Her son was always getting into fights at school.
彼女の息子は学校でいつもケンカになるようなことをしていた。

battle
a fight between opposing armies or groups of people
対立している軍、あるいは団体間の闘い
例
The English king was killed at the Battle of Hastings.
ヘイスティングスの戦いでイングランド王が戦死した。

brawl 
a noisy fight between a group of people
集団の騒がしいケンカ
例
He was hurt in a drunken brawl.
彼は酔っ払いの乱闘騒ぎでケガをした。

riot
a fight involving a large number of people, especially people who are protesting about something
何かに抗議している人たちが、かなり大勢で起こす闘い
例
The book provoked riots all over Europe.
その本が引き金になって、ヨーロッパ全土に暴動が起こった。

struggle
a long hard fight to get freedom, political rights etc
自由や、政治的な権利などを得ようとして起こす長くつらい闘い
（文脈によって、「非常に困難な状態」を表すことがあります。）

a power struggle between forces favoring and opposing change
変革に賛成する勢力と反対する勢力の間での権力闘争

今まであまり使ったことのない単語があれば、それを使って短文や会話文を作ってみましょう。
