"on"は「上」のイメージで、"in"は「中」のイメージで使うとか、日付や曜日、年などでよく使う前置詞は、易しいと感じますが、紛らわしくて使いづらい前置詞もあります。そうした前置詞を正しく使って、ワンランク上の会話ができるようにしましょう。

今日のポイントは、"name"（名前）に付く前置詞です。

状況を設定して、日本語表現と合わせて確認していきます。

① 本名と違う名前を使っている場合

H.H. Munro wrote short stories under the name (of) Saki.
H.H.マンロウは、サキと言う名前で短編小説を書いている。

② 名詞に呼び名を付ける場合

He married a young woman by the name of Sarah Hunt.
彼は、サラ・ハントという名前の若い女性と結婚した。

③ 「名義」という日本語表現になる場合

The house is in my husband’s name.
その家は夫名義です。

④ 予約するときに使う場合

I’ve booked a table in the name of Sasaki.
佐々木（の名前）でテーブルを予約しました。

⑤ 所有しているものが多い、あるいは少ないこと強調する場合

He arrived in America without a penny to his name.
所持金がほとんどない状態でアメリカに着いた。

He didn’t have a qualification to his name.
彼は何の資格も持っていなかった。

⑥ 「名において」という表現になる場合

There were cruel experiments on animals carried out in the name of science.
科学の名の下に行われる残酷な動物実験があった。

Are these the things people do in the name of love？
人これが愛の名の下に行うことなのか？

⑦ 「名ばかりの」という表現になる場合

He was president in name only.
彼は名ばかりの大統領だった。

She was his wife in all but name.
彼女は名ばかりの妻だった。

⑧ 「～という名前で呼ぶ／通っている」という場合

Everyone called him by his first name.
皆彼のことをファーストネームで呼んだ。

As he had black hair, he went by the name of Kuro.
彼は黒猫だったので、クロという名前で通っていた。

⑨ 「名前は知っている」という表現で使う。

"know someone by name"には、２通りの場合があります。（ケンブリッジより）

to have heard the name of a person but not seen or talked to them
人の名前は聞いたことがあるが、その人を見たことも話したこともない。

I know the author of the book by name.
著者の名前は知ってるわ。

to know a person whom you do not see or talk with very often well enough that you know their name
あまり会ったり話したりしない人でも、名前を知っている程度には知っている。

The headteacher knew all the children by name.
その学年主任は全ての子供たちの名前は知っていた。

⑩ 「名前で呼ぶ」という表現になる場合

The waiter greeted him by name.
そのウェイターは彼の名前で呼んで挨拶した。

"name"に前置詞を付けた形の表現を使って、会話文を考えてみましょう。
